It all begins with an idea.

The Rifai Institute for Interfaith and Intercultural Initiatives at Valparaiso University is all about bringing people together—fostering cultural awareness, acceptance, and understanding among those of different faiths and backgrounds. Named after Dr. Hytham Rifai, a medical professional from Northwest Indiana, the Institute brings to life his vision of encouraging interfaith dialogue and mutual respect. For Dr. Rifai, who came to the United States 45 years ago as a young student, this project reflects a personal journey and a deep commitment to creating spaces that promote empathy, understanding, and meaningful exchange.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr. Rifai shared his thoughts on this journey and the mission of the new center, saying, “We are all different in our origin, belief, faith, and culture. At the same time, we are all human, and we should engage in dialogue to get to know and accept each other.” This spirit of inclusivity is at the heart of the Rifai Institute. In collaboration with Valparaiso University, the goal is to make this a space where students and community members can come together, learn from one another, and celebrate their differences as a source of strength.

Valparaiso Community leaders underscored the significance of the center. At the groundbreaking event, U.S. representative, Frank J. Mrvan, reflected on the importance of the Institute’s mission in today’s divided world, saying, “In a time when our world often feels divided, it’s moments like this where we understand what brings us together. Diversity is our strength in Northwest Indiana.” Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas pointed out how well the center aligns with the city’s vision for an inclusive community, while VU President Jose Padilla remarked on the symbolism of building an interfaith institute at a Lutheran university—showing Valpo’s commitment to welcoming people from all religious backgrounds.

The Rifai Institute will offer educational classes and host annual dialogues, lectures, and panels on a wide range of topics, including interfaith discussions on biblical figures, prayer, rituals, ethics, and wisdom across various religious traditions. These programs will provide students, faculty, community members, and religious leaders with opportunities to engage in open, respectful conversations and to explore what unites us across faiths and cultures.

While this Institute is Dr. Rifai’s legacy, it is also a family effort. His wife, Nuha, and his children, Dana, Hadie, Hashem, Jenna, and Ameer, are fully committed to supporting this mission and ensuring the Institute thrives as a place that promotes mutual understanding and acceptance.

With roots in unity, compassion, and lifelong learning, the Rifai Institute stands as an enduring contribution to both the Valpo community and the wider world. It is expected to open within the next 12 months on land generously provided by the Rifai family, who are also covering all construction costs. The idea for the Institute began during the tenure of former VU President Mark Heckler but faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With renewed energy, the Institute moves forward as a testament to Valparaiso University’s dedication to interfaith and intercultural initiatives.
